Interstellar — Animated Title Sequence

For this Graphic Design III assignment, I was tasked with creating an original animated title sequence for an existing film. I chose Interstellar (2014), directed by Christopher Nolan, for its emotional depth, cinematic scale, and intricate relationship between time, space, and human endurance. My goal was to capture the film’s sense of wonder and isolation through visual pacing, atmospheric motion, and typography that reflects the tension between science and emotion.

Completed during my senior year in Graphic Design III, this project represents one of the most technically ambitious and creatively demanding motion designs I’ve produced. It required seamless integration between Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, bridging asset creation, compositional design, and intricate motion dynamics into a unified visual narrative.

The objective was to craft an original title sequence for Interstellar that embodied the film’s vast scale, emotional gravity, and cinematic depth. Through precise control of timing, light, and spatial movement, each transition and visual cue was meticulously choreographed to mirror the tension, wonder, and awe of space exploration—ultimately resulting in a piece that feels both epic and intimate in its expression.

Ideation & storyboard

Before beginning animation, I developed a series of sketches and storyboards to map out camera movement, timing, and visual flow. My goal was to maintain Interstellar’s sense of vastness while keeping the animation concise and purposeful. Each frame represents a key scene transition — from spacecraft movement and wormhole travel to moments of human connection and isolation.

I explored 2D animation paired with subtle 3D perspective shifts to achieve cinematic depth without overcomplicating the motion. Planning the storyboard first helped me organize pacing, decide on focal points, and ensure every transition supported the emotional tone of the sequence.
